Featuring Beistle Collectibles
Along with this shelf display of items pulled from The Halloween Retrospect archive collection featuring packages of Beistle paper ephemera are two art-book surveys Halloween Artifacts, V!: Lighting and Halloween Artifacts, V2 Festoons and four research digests The Halloween Retrospect V1, V2, V3, V4.
Well, this is a bit of a catch-up entry – that copies over from the blogger presence – never posted here!!! That entry explained that the archive library work at The Halloween Retrospect librarian doesn’t lend a great deal of time for photo-hyping the collection with maximalist photos. The time spend here is, perhaps unfortunately, ultimately spent on deeper research for reference guides and art-book surveys (see above). This means most items rest safely in storage until time to photograph them. The result is that this shelf display of vintage Beistle Halloween collectible envelopes (with contents) is a bit of a rarity…created in a time of considering subject matter for future publications while simultaneously celebrating the existing six THR books for sale on Etsy – see also @halloweenretrospecs on Instagram (below).
About these photos – there are nearly 50 original envelopes (most with original content) of various Beistle products ranging from complete party outfits (on the lower shelf) to individual envelopes (on the upper shelf) for select items such as invitations, etc. Note that there are quite a few vertically stacked (at top right) somewhat hiding to fit the space – so perhaps a future photo is in order.
By the way, many of these were saved from the moldering backing pages of a salesman sample book that THR has not previously shown in its own various printed or online materials (so that might be worth exploring in a future post). These items were carefully removed by a paper expert some years ago, and THR is forever grateful for their expertise.
As for current THR archive storage, someone asked how these items were currently stored for preservation. My current favorite containers are called Crystal Clear from clearbags.com online made of BOPP/OPP which is considered an archive safe material. The company offers tons of sizes (thoough you may have to manually adjust if you have a great deal of variously sized items). For the interior, I cut pieces of 2ply museum board to support the vintage item which means (in case of these fragile envelopes) I put the envelope on one side and contents on the other – offering extra protection through separation (below). Unfortunately a bit of glare is the problem after that which can make photography a bit of a problem….
Meanwhile, the digital records of that Beistle sampler (in addition to the actual items that were saved from the original deteriorating container) are still referenced by THR for various hints and revelations that the original layout provide. It was used a primary source with Halloween Artifacts, V2 Festoons. VOLUME 2: FESTOONS
Survey Book (Release Date – Oct 2025):
This vintage Halloween collectibles book for autumn 2025 – Halloween Artifacts, Volume 2: Festoons – continues the large-format photo-book series to offer collectors more of a gallery-style layout. The latest focuses on objects of orange-and-black honeycomb tissue-paper (which creates three-dimensional garlands, centerpieces, and costumes). Once again, the 8-1/2″x11″ softcover book centers around a 100-page collection of collectibles, and includes for each: 1) full-color feature images in a 7″x6″ frame, together with 2) notes including a timeline tally of dates from novelty merchandise catalogs, and 3) clipping of the item from one or more select vintage sources.

Given THR”s niche subject matter, it is wonderful to now offer six vintage Halloween collectibles books for sale! THR never guessed it would be publishing this long — long after offering a little 32-page verbose digest (now on it’s second run) about such dry topics as vintage educational materials for Halloween (etc). But, since then, the author has had the pleasure of working with a Dennison archivist to discover the facts behind that company’s publications serial numbers… and the pleasure of working with a Hallmark archivist to explore that company’s wonderful mid-century pop-up centerpieces…. and a great time discovering Milton Bradley is to credit for faux stained-glass decorations… or to offer the recently-released large photo books on lanterns and tissue paper honeycomb that feature wonderful collector contributions!
THR realizes this two+ year explosion of energy has perhaps resulted in an confusing array of subject matter and bonus materials. One hope is that new, various groupings of past works will help alleviate any confusion… such as all six books above, or just the digests below, as like one with just the digests.
